Caring for your matcha tools — Whisk, Bowl & Canister

Good matcha tools can last for years - with just a little care. Here's how to look after the three pieces at the heart of your ritual.

The bamboo whisk (chasen)

The whisk needs the most care, because it's the most delicate. Before its very first use, soak the tips in warm water for a minute or two to soften the bamboo.

  • After whisking, rinse it in plain warm water - never use soap

  • Gently swish off any stuck matcha; don't scrub

  • Air-dry it on a whisk stand, tips facing up, so it keeps its shape

  • Never store it back in the plastic case it came in - that traps moisture

The matcha bowl (chawan)

A chawan is easy. rinse it with warm water after use, and hand wash gently when needed. avoid sudden temperature changes - Don't pour boiling water into a cold bowl, and handle it with the care any nice ceramic deserves.

The tea canister

Keep your canister dry. before refilling it with fresh matcha, make sure the inside is completely clean and dry, so no old powder or moisture lingers. a good canister will protect your matcha for years.

When to replace your whisk

Bamboo is natural and won't last forever. When several prongs have broken and whisking gets harder, it's time for a new chasen. A small crack in the handle, though, is normal and harmless.
