If you love matcha but want something gentler in the evening, meet Hojicha — roasted green tea, whisked just like matcha, with about half the caffeine.
First — what is Hojicha?
Hojicha is Japanese green tea that's been roasted. The roasting turns it warm, toasty, and mellow — and naturally lowers the caffeine. it's milled into a fine powder you can whisk just like matcha, but it's the cosy, wind-down cousin of the family.
The Hojicha latte — step by step
-
Sift 1-2 teaspoons of Hojicha powder into your cup
-
Add a splash of warm water (about 80°C) and whisk into a smooth paste
-
Warm and froth your milk — oat milk is especially lovely here
-
Pour the milk over the Hojicha base, stir gently, and enjoy
Make it extra cosy
A small dusting of cinnamon on top turns a Hojicha latte into the perfect evening drink. It's also delicious iced on a warm afternoon.
When to reach for it
Because Hojicha is lower in caffeine, it's the one to choose after dinner, or any time you want the warmth and ritual of matcha without a late-day caffeine hit.
Our Uji Kyoto Hojicha is a stronger roast with a smooth, mellow finish — made for cosy evenings.
