How to Store Matcha so it stays fresh and green

Matcha is delicate, and where you keep it decides whether your last bowl tastes as good as your first. The good news: keeping it fresh is simple.

What makes matcha fade

Three things turn a vivid green matcha dull and flat: light, air, and heat. They fade the color and soften the bright, fresh flavor. Protect your matcha from those three, and it stays lovely for weeks.

The simple rules:

  • Keep it sealed — air is matcha's biggest enemy

  • Keep it away from light and from strong-smelling foods

  • Once opened, store it in the fridge — it stays fresher and greener there

  • Let a chilled pack come back to room temperature before opening, to avoid condensation

How long does matcha last?

Unopened, matcha keeps well for about a year. once opened, it's at its best within about four weeks (six for Hojicha) — that's when the color and flavor really shine. It won't be unsafe after that, just less vivid.

Why a canister helps

A proper tea canister blocks light and air far better than a folded bag with a clip. Pour your matcha in from the bag, keep it cool, and every bowl stays as fresh as the first. It's also less waste — refill it again and again.

Keep your matcha at its best with an authentic Japanese tea canister from our accessories collection. and if your matcha has lost its color, it might just be time for a fresh bag — find your grade with our quiz.
