The Perfect Matcha Latte at Home
Share
A café matcha latte is lovely. But at five or six dollars a cup, every day, it adds up fast. Here's how to make one at home that's just as good — for about a dollar.
What you'll need:
-
A barista grade matcha — Camellia or Asahi are made for milk
-
Warm water (not boiling — about 80°C / 176°F)
-
Your milk of choice — oat is our favorite with matcha
-
A whisk or a small electric fother, and a sifter
The hot matcha latte — step by step
-
Sift 1-2 teaspoons of matcha into your cup or bowl — this stops clumps
-
Add a small splash of hot water and whisk into a smooth, lump-free paste
-
Warm and froth your milk, then pour it over the matcha base
-
Give it a gentle stir, and that's it — a smooth, café-quality latte
The iced version
for an iced matcha latte, whisk the same matcha base, then pour it over a glass of ice and cold milk. stir, and watch the pretty green-and-white layers swirl together.
A few small tips
-
Always sift — it's ten seconds, and it's the difference between smooth and grainy
-
If your latte tastes bitter, your water was too hot, or you used a little too much matcha
-
No sweetener needed with good matcha — but a touch of honey or maple is lovely if you like
